Program Notes: Ensemble Companio gave me one of the best gifts in my career when they commissioned me to write a piece for their 10th Anniversary Season. Writing this piece was cathartic, empowering, difficult, and many more feelings. When I met them at the Boston premiere, these feelings multiplied by 6473248.5!

Garden is about home, returning, and belonging. Ensemble Companio and Dr. Erik Peregrine showed me a home in their choir, their sound, and their smiles.

I wrote the text for this piece based on my idea that we are all gardens. We all affect our lives, whether for the best or not. Some people will stay and make roots and grow with us; others will pass by and leave a mark. All we can do in the end is to keep our doors open for people to come and enjoy who we are, to truly connect with them, and show them all our layers with no shame. If they decide to stay and you see it is a good fit, you’ll both get to learn from each other and create a beautiful garden of memories.

Text: Come to my garden.

Get lost
Wander
in the shadows.

A garden
the size of a forest
With branches
Full of light,
With leaves made
of sun.

Entwined
In vines,
In rain
Wrapped in air.

A garden of thorns
and roses
You come
A seed,
No petals yet.

My arms are open
For fire
To come,
To breathe.

Come
with the wind,
Dance, dance, dance!
Don’t hide.
Be!

Walk among the flowers.
Make your way,
Your roots.

Hold strong
to the land of green

Where rain and dust meet.

I am the garden,
I am these flowers,
This sun,
This grass.
I am these rocks
The running waters.

I am the garden
Where you’ve come
To make a home.

Hold me
Hold me,
Forever.

Other awesome details we tell people 🙂
