Keep your audience close to your music with this advice
Do you make your music available for others to enjoy? I know it can be a bit of a no-brainer, but many composers have a website or social media with zero ways to listen to their music! How do you keep your audience close if we can’t listen to what you do?
That’s always my biggest frustration when I can’t find music by composers I love. I want to listen to all of their portfolios on their websites, and sometimes it is as if they make it impossible! I am guilty of that myself for some of my pieces. It’s ok, I am slowly working on it.
There are so many ways we can make our music be present for others to consider programming, or simply connect with the message there. If conductors cannot listen to your pieces, or even find them, odds are that they will never program it.
So, how do you make your piece available for others to consume?
Keep them interested. Use a midi mockup and create a video score
Nowadays, we mostly write music with computers. And if we don’t, there is always a point when the music must make it to a software to be able to sell it or share it.
Even though we might not have the best sounds, a midi mockup can serve for some people to have an idea of your piece. Many run away from MIDI because it can sound pretty awful sometimes, but I’ve had many other conductors to ask for a midi just because they want an easy way to have a preview.
If they are interested, they will then have time with the piece, playing through the piano reduction, etc.
I also must add that many people have shared with me that if one can make a piece sound amazing in MIDI, then it will be 15 times better in a live performance. I guess this is not a rule, but I can see why people say these things!
Find apps that can turn your music into voices. PDF to Music is one!
Many years ago, a friend discovered an app that sings the PDF scores! It sounds terribly mechanic but for a software that does it automatically, it was not bad. You basically upload a PDF that you made with Finale, Sibelius, or any of these other apps and it creates a performance out of it. It is amazing. I am yet to understand how but that’s not the point.
You might want to use this just as a last resort but I think it might be better than nothing in some cases!
Find friends or hire me to record your piece
If you don’t know yet, I am a singer and I have done most of the demo recordings you can find on my website. If you want us to work together in your awesome piece, send me an email or a text.
If you want to find some people that can help you create a demo recording, in this post I share some ideas to make it happen.
