Looking for Hispanic Choral Composers
I was shocked when recently, on a phone call with my best friend, German, and I could not name enough Spanish-Speaking choral composers (“enough” meaning a decent number that allowed me to feel that I knew my fellow composers/friends).
How can I be a new choral music advocate and not know more about this? I felt ashamed. Though shame might not be the best word to describe it, I am excited to recognize this problem and actively work to fix it.
Hispanic choral composers of the 21st century
I want to learn as much as I can about choral composers who are either Spanish-speaking or Spanish-speaking descendants. With this information, I will create a book to share with other people, especially conductors, to bring awareness to our choral music. I know it is not just me who does not know, or has not yet collaborated with many composers from Latin America, Spain, or many other places in the world! I want to build a bridge that allows us to connect.
Who will be part of this list?
The composer must have been previously performed (not all pieces, but at least a few), show a dedicated career to the choral arts (this can mean many things, maybe they are primarily a choral composer, or conduct a choir, or sing, or have a portfolio that shows their commitment to choral music), and have a way of being contacted to purchase/acquire the pieces listed (either published, self-published, or available somehow).
- Works must have been written in the last 25 years (exceptions are possible).
- Composers may or may not be alive but their music must be of the 21st century (from 2000 on).
- Proof of commitment to the choral arts and choral composition.
- At least two of the pieces submitted must be in Spanish (no score will be needed).
- Composers can live anywhere in the world but must have a connection to the Spanish-speaking community.
Remember, my goal is to bring awareness to your career and music, and for that, we need to be able to find you, communicate, and have access to your works. If you are, know, or have collaborated with a composer who fits this description, please fill out/share this link provide information, tell me about them in the comments, or email me at composer.cordero@gmail.com
I’m looking forward to learning and to creating this resource for our concerts to be filled with many more Hispanic composers.
