Give yourself more time to write music
As I wrote this post, I was debating myself if I should call it “make more time” or “give yourself more time.” The truth is that both work because whether making it or giving it, you have the control.
I know that it might be hard to understand because I don’t know all the details from your life, but hear me out because I am not the only one who says this.
You decide on your schedule. Make room for your music
Sometimes, the simple answers are the ones that we need to hear more. You might be expecting a magic trick but the truth is that when you decide to block time in your calendar for composition, it is when you’ll sit down and compose.
As Anna Diemer-soprano- said in HCP 13 that she uses apps to schedule the time to do most of the things she needs to do. If you have not listened to this episode, I recommend you to do it! She discusses how this helps her to make sure that she is organized and that she will get it done at some point.
Many trainers recommend putting the gym in our calendar to get it done. Pat Flynn’s course on getting 100 emails in your list mentions before anything, to block one hour of your calendar the next day.
It is that simple, go to your calendar, find one hour and write “composition.”
You control your time. Give yourself the time for your music!
You know how much you spend watching TV or reading the news. You know how much time you can set out in your week to dedicate exclusively to composition.
Don’t waste energies telling me that you are too busy, but use it to write music. Use that time to squeeze in a little session of ten minutes.
Yes! Writing music can happen in that little span of time. You don’t have to sit for one hour every time. Just give yourself permission to improvise for ten minutes or to proofread what you wrote yesterday.
Give yourself the gift of writing music, and enjoy it for as long as it lasts. Then, little by little, find more time! Stephen King (yes, I read again the book so all of these are fresh in my mind!) says that he reads books in little moments throughout the days.
Maybe carry with you a little book and write in lines, during long waiting times, or in lunch breaks. Make room for your music in your life.
