Program Notes: In struggling to create a piece about pure joy amid so much chaos in the world, Julie and I wrote about how people affect each other. We are Waves (WAW) explores the discovery and ¬ of our vulnerability and power. Whether we choose to love, to brighten someone else day or, sadly, choose to hurt someone, or war and guns, it is always a choice. We can choose art and uplift each other, not drown others to get ahead. We are all on these waters, and it’s up to us to make them a place to live instead of surviving.

I avoided to use obvious wave sounds from the choir, but I couldn’t help to include the Ocean Drum as an optional instrument after I heard it in a concert with Soprano Hila Plitmann. When researching this instrument, even seeing the marbles inside the ocean drum and how they all affect each other as they move made me think of Julie’s poem.

The task is simple. We just need to keep choosing kindness.
