The Artist Way: Morning Pages
Morning Pages have become part of my every day. I know what you will think. Here comes another preacher of the same method. Well, I want to offer my experience with the morning pages because they have helped me to meditate while writing.
Morning Pages have been a daily exercise that now became a routine that I look forward to. They’ve helped me explore my ideas and discovering that I wanted to do more, reason why I started a podcast. You can listen to it in Spotify as well.
Do I write the morning pages “only in the mornings?
At the beginning I did! Every morning after waking up it was time for morning pages. I loved doing it because, even though when I had no idea of what I was doing, as soon as I was in, I found something to explore or would write so many different things that I would find something that I wanted to explore deeper and use it as a central theme for some lines.
Later, as I keep exploring my life, I decided to try several hours, and it does not feel the same. It is weird to not wake up and do them, but I am also balancing that with waking up and writing music, which is my main job.
You can see the dilemma.
What have they taught me?
The most important thing? It might be to express myself freely, and to let myself be.
This writing exercise makes me show up, write about anything, and help me to process through doing.
Yes, I think, but I do it as I write, and it is a good exercise because I am not paralyzed anymore. I don’t stay frozen in front of the pages overthinking.
They have also shown me that there is more about myself that I thought there was. They are a wonderful listener who is always there telling me: tell me more, I want to know. I want to listen to what you have to say. For a creative person, that is gold.
Morning Pages are a great way to process thoughts. I use them for personal stuff, for work, for ideas, for music, for words.
I use them for life.
I need to go now because I have not written my Morning Pages today!
I am grateful for The Artist Way, and Morning Pages. They help me to get to know myself. I have not figured out all of me, but I will continue to do so!
